Learning Common Values
Alex Pall says the Duo started with their common values, which after some time in the studio, became the foundation of their sound. Then there came a time of digging deeper and challenging one another to become better artists in the process. As a professional you know that you are going to pay your bills doing this, but you also realize that the pursuit means much more than a job.
Journey of Self-discovery
Alex Pall made the comment on July 28, 2016, to Mathias Rosenzweig for his Andy Warhol’s Interview that the reasons for relating to them and their music are so much deeper than it being something that they were just doing to pass time. The early Chainsmoker sound came from a place where each of them was developing into the artist that could both express who they were and what the world was around them in their music. They both understood that when others listened to them they could hear the “journey of self-discovery” came with that territory. Probably the curse of any musician is to become cliche and dig deeper for the “unheard-of-before” element of music-making. So, says Alex Pall, “we kind of always questioned those things.”
Bouncing the Ideas with Feedback
One of the common breakdowns between members of is the failure to communicate. Alex Pall expressed the need for daily bouncing ideas off one another, even if its just a few minutes after a photo shoot or a ride together in a cab from one place to another. It is important they know they are on the same page and they are both satisfied with the process. Feelings are not everything, but they are vitally important in an artistic discussion that molds the identity of your sound. Alex Pall says the one route things becoming “interesting and engaged,” is in finding ways in “trying new things.”
The EDM Duo from Upper State New York and becoming the international voice of what is current, progressive and contemporary, the Chainsmokers are achieving a sound that expresses both what they experience and what is current in the world today. Their lyrics and sound both express the sound of their culture as well as the growing pains of becoming artist in a world fragmented by anxiety and illusive fears. Since their debut album the Chainsmokers have achieved Billboard #1’s as well as becoming ASCAP recognized songwriter of the year award.
