Forbes Magazine included the name of Brazilian Guilherme Paulus in its Forbes billionaires because of the success of his company CVC Brasil Operadora e Agencia de Viagens S.A. The success of CVC came about because of the boom in the tourism sector in Brazil. This was a fitting reward given to this businessman who started the company back in 1972. He was still 24 at that time but he was able to steer the direction of CVC to become Brazil’s largest tour operator. Now, at 68, he is still active as a tourism investor in his native country.
Guilherme Paulus was a co-founder of CVC. When his politician partner left the company in 1976, he persisted and worked hard to ensure that CVC will succeed. The rest is history. The business success of this tour operator caught the eye of a global private equity company, the Carlyle Group which bought 63.6 percent of its shares worth about $420 million.
This freed the time of Guilherme Paulus from his various responsibilities in CVC. He has gone to establish a hotel network, the GJP Hotels and Resorts which he started developing in 2005. He focused his energies in building the business of GJP Hotels and Resorts so that it can be a strong force to contend with in Brazil’s tourism industry. It has now grown to the extent that it is managing and controlling a network of 20 hotels and resorts. Its current goal is to build and maintain hotels close to the airports in the country.
Brazil enjoyed a tourism boom when it hosted several major global sports events. Huge throngs of tourists and sports lovers from all over the world spent their time and money in the World Soccer Cup held in Brazil in 2014. And then two years later, millions of fresh tourists across the globe arrived in Brazil to witness the Summer Olympics in 2016. This was the time when the name of Guilherme Paulus was included in the Forbes billionaires list.
At 68, Guilherme Paulus is a rich man. He has sold his CVC shares to the tune of R $750 million. And then he earned an additional R $70 million when he transferred Webjet Airline to Gol. He is still active in business, being the chairman of Paulus, also a tour operator. His connection with CVC is not totally cut off though. He still owns 8 percent shares in the company.
