Dr. Saad Saad: Helping the Most Vulnerable of Patients

In the last four decades of his work, Dr. Saad Saad has established himself as one of the most prominent pediatric surgeons. He has done thousands of complicated pediatric surgeries from children of all ages and backgrounds. When he was currently based in New Jersey, he volunteered in a total of eight medical missions in Jerusalem to help poor children get the services they need. Additionally, Dr. Saad Saad also owns two patents for his inventions to improve the pediatric surgery practice.

 

Dr. Saad Saad recalls his experience as a high school student in Kuwait. In 1965, he initially thought of being an engineer like his two brothers. However, during the summer, he experienced high-temperature outdoors, which went to over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. He then realized that he wanted to have a profession where he would work indoors and do not need to expose himself to the heat for health reasons.

 

Throughout his career as a doctor, Dr. Saad Saad has gone to several countries treating children from both rich and poor families. In one occasion, Dr. Saad worked in Riyadh at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital. The Protocol Office and the Hospital Chief asked specifically for his services to perform even the most complex pediatric surgeries. Most of the medical professionals working in the hospital are highly trained with years of experience.

 

His stay in the said hospital gave him one of the most memorable surgery experience. A baby in the hospital was admitted, the youngest to have a case of an aneurysm. Dr. Saad Saad was able to save the baby’s life and was able to promote the study of this case to educate other medical professionals.

Dr. Saad Saad was born in Palestine and eventually moved to Kuwait. He was one of the family’s eight children–all of which have highly-esteemed degrees. Dr. Saad earned his medical degree in Cairo University at Egypt in which he finished with honors and ranked as a salutatorian in his class.

 

Dr. Saad Saad admittedly says that he grew up in a poor family. He mentioned that it was his strongest motivation to strive and do well in medical school. He believes that difficult situations bring the best in people, and this is where he attributes his success in his academics and career.

When his father traveled for work, Saad Saad’s mother and his siblings were forced to board a bus to an unknown destination. Saad Saad’s father was an enthusiastic petroleum mechanic in the Middle East in the 1950’s. Having competent skills in the business, he attracted foreign investors from the industry. Consequently, he moved his family to Kuwait, where Saad Saad spent most of his life. Saad joined school and one day; his father planted a seed that he would carry on in his life. His father told him that it was of utmost value for him to pursue education and earn a living from a recognized industry. With a childhood filled with hardships and multiple responsibilities as a child, Dr. Saad Saad focused on changing his life.

Dr. Saad Saad developed a passion for medicine when he saw his brothers working as laborers in Kuwait. Even though they were engineers, he was discouraged by the scorching sun. He, therefore, set his mind on medicine. It is fascinating how the weather can change the way in which a person thinks. Saad Saad joined medical school in 1964. For the number of times he traveled to school, he purchased an air ticket at $99 and flew from Cairo, Egypt, and Lebanon for his ECFMG examination. Being a dedicated student, Saad Saad passed the exam and focused on training in the United States of America.
